Bled gorge (or Blejski vintgar) is 1.6 km long and river Radovna flows through it (near the village Zgornje Gorje). Walls of the sink are 50 to 100 meters high, the height of the slope is 250 meters. In the gorge there are jumps, rapids, potholes and other forms of water corrosion activity. By the end of the gorge, 13 meters high gorge waterfall Šum is falling over threshold.

The gorge was equipped with galleries and brides already in year 1893. Routes were renovated several times. At the end of the gorge is the suppression for hydroelectric power station Gorge. The railway line Jesenice – Most na Soči is crossing the troughs. Railway bridge in Bled gorge is the largest fully preserved stone arch railway bridge in Slovenia. It was built of cut stone in the years 1904 and 1905, by design of architect Robert Schonhofer.

These are Slovenia’s first tourist arranged sinks that gave its name to the other gorges (Vintgar) and are protected as a natural monument.

THE FORMATION OF THE GORGE

Before the ice age, River Radovna flowed towards east. Bohinj glacier dammed it with ice and moraine material, which resulted with lake and river founding its other way. It went towards northeast over the belt of middle Triassic dark limestone with respondents between Poljana (884 m) and Hom (844 m) towards the valley of the Sava Dolinka.

We distinguish more engraving phases of Radovna. At the same time, all limestone block was rising and neotectonic Waterfall Šum was created. The waterfall is still being created by retrograde erosion on the contact with clay of the upper Oligocene age.
