| The church is more than 300 years old and in year 1996 was for this occasion made stained glass window on choir, work of the academic painter Mire Ličen – Krmpotić. The church has the shape of the camp and is a unique example of such design in the valley, as the camps usually were on the hills. It is sandwiched between old, medieval Šturje gase with typical Mediterranean architecture. Originally it had a bell tower in the gable. Before 180 years it has been expanded, it was lengthened and nwe bell tower was added. About 100 years ago it was only a church. In year 1890, Mr. Mihael Arko became first priest, althugh the parish is formally appointed on 15 August 1893, its appointment comes into full force worth a year later. Baptimal books are from 1620 onwards, although they were already enacted in year 1856 with Tridentin council. The church is a single nave, with a presbytery by which is additionally built bell tower. |
The church, despite all the alternations, maintained its baroque features:
– bulb bell tower
– cornice or wreath and protruding borders
– arch wall, in the vault of the nave are parasitised spandrels or arched caps (some are exploited for daylight, others for paintings)
The highest artistic value have pictures, which are hunging in the sanctuary: Saint George, 1848, work of Mihael Langus and Mary’s coronation, work of Šubič – Škofja loka workshop.
In year 1967 and 1968 left a fragment of his work in Šturje church also a Slovenian expressionist painter Tone Kralj. He painted the Stations of the Cross and ceiling frescoes:
– on the ceiling of the nave is Assumption of Mary and Holy family
– in the vault caps is: the birth of Jesus – the three wise, meeting of Mary and Jesus after the resurrection, St. Anthony and St. Martin – patron saints of branches and eucharist and baptism.
Architect Kregal designed confessional at the choir stairs. Stone wealth of the church is mostly Baroque sculpture. It carries the year 1702, side altars year 1742 and 1757. The is no report who the authors are. Perhaps the main altar is work of well known stonemasonry and sculpture family Paccassi. Altars maintin the tradition of Primorje colonnade altars. Between large and small are some differences, particularly in the ornaments and way of intersion. Otherwise are these side altars only modest version of the main. In the layout of the walls, beams, niches, in the design of Attica … there are no big differences. Not even between figures – Angels from Attica. Even cracked penthouse occurs over several decedes. Interesting is tabernacle of the main altar. It is from year 1709. in the crown under the dome are flying figures of putti. The pulpit was Baroque, with inlays, but today it is turned into a sacrificial altar. | |
At the end of last century was after Langus painting of St. George made wooden relief, so they would more plasticly illustrate the patron saint of the church. Altar image was made of small artistic value and it is the Tyrolean work. Right there, in year 1903 they ordered Heart of Jesus and in year 1904 Heart of Mary – plastics that adorn the side altars. In year 1928, the Slovenian sculptur France Gorše made drafts of four evangelists for the niche on the northern wall of the nave. Drafts are now in the recotry, niche are adorning the plastics of St. Anthony, Stl Aloysius and Little Terezija, at main altar are two statues of St. Florian and St. Anthony.
