Hubelj is a river (according to some sources it is a stream), during rainy times mountain torrent, which flows along the border between cadastral municipalities Lokavec and Šturje. It originates from three karstic springs (waterfalls) at the foot of the hill Navrše, where the water comes out from a numerous more or less accesible caves of Karst underground. The spring is especially picturesque at high water, which in mighty waterfalls falls from higher elevation springs. From higher holes it vomits the water in the huge amount of up to 65 cubic meters per second.
It is magnificent view on foamed water when little drops and drops spray from altitude of 249 meters towards the bridge, which is 40 meters lower. Waters emerge from the underground through three caves: Big Hubelj kitchen, Spider’s net and Eastern Hubelj cave. In dry times they measured over 400 tunnels, which are ending with rockfalls and chiffon basins. All waterfalls are seen only in rainy period. Hubelj is one of Karstic rivers in Slovenia, as in the village Dolenje, after only 5 kilometers, flows into river Vipava.
In the great battle between Teodizij and Evgenij in year 394 BC was Hubelj mentioned as Fluvium Frigidium and Ajdovščina as Castrum ad Fluvium Frigidum – the city of the cold river. If this river is really Hubelj or not, maybe it is Vipava or even Soča, will maybe be told in time. The origin of river Hubelj is still today shrouded in mystery. According to some sources, by their word was proclaimed as mountain torrent by Lombards, who were advancing through here towards today’s northern Italy. At Hubelj runs 3100 meters long interesting nature didactic trail, taking us through mysterious world of nature in the immediate vicinity of the city.
