The ossuary was built in times of systematic italian arranging of military cemeteries on Gradič around the church St. Anthony. This is the only italian ossuary in Slovenia, because all other remains of the soldiers were transferred to ossuary Sredpolje (Redipuglia) and Oslavje. Ossuary of italian troops was completed in year 1938 and was solemnly opened on 18. September by Benito Musolini. It is a work of sculptur Giannina Gastiglionija and architect Giovanni Greppi.
It was built in the form of three octagonal circuits, that are narrowing concentrically towards the top where the church of St. Anthony stands. They transferred the remains of 7014 known and unknown italian soldiers, who fell in the first world war, from surrounding military cemeteries to the ossuary. Their names are engraved in slabs of greenish sepentine. By the ossuary are also placed memorials dedicated to italian soldiers, who were in year 1981 transferred from Bovec. On the way from Kobarid to the church of St. Anthony are placed 14 stations of the Cross. For the ossuary and the stations of the Cross manage the italian state. East of the church are forur military tombstones, which where transferred from cemetery in Bovec.
