Janče

Janče is a village, which is located on the back of Janče hill on southwestern part of Posavje hills, which stands between the valley of river Sava on north and the valley of Besnica on the south. The village is part of the city municipality of Ljubljana, and otherwise of district community Sostro. Hill Janče is 792 meters high. The top of the hill offers beautiful view on surrounding places and Posavje hills. On the top stands the church of St. Nicholas. In the vicinity there is a chapel of Mary Rosary that was erected to protect the village before natural disasters. In the year 1895 there was an earthquake with the epicentre in village Janče. Somewhat lower on the Janče hill, on southern part, one can find the chapel of St. Nicholas. The village is known by its chestnut holiday and is also known as hiking point, especially in spring, when cherries, and autumn, when chestnuts are mature.

Villagers are known by their national consciousness yet from the times of national struggles. On 23rd May 1869 here erupted bloody fights at publicity trip by German Turnverein members from Ljubljana. Villagers have taken the Germans’ flag, trampled it and drove the hikers out from Janče. After this event revenge from Austrian authorities ensued, so they sent constables and police officers into the village. In this fights Jakob Rode was killed, several farmers were captured and sentenced to imprisonment.

Janče contributed their part in NLS, when the warriors of 2nd group detachment, from 18th until 22nd May 1942, fought with 2000 members of German police and army. In this fights 11 NLS warriors were killed, among them also national hero Jože Kovačič. On enemy’s side around 70 Germans had fallen.

In village Janče a seat of courier station TV-2 was also established in year 1943. It was operational until March 1945. Commander of the station was Maks Menart – Karo. The link between courier stations TV-2, TV-3 above Stična and TV-3a above Krka was maintained by couriers. Through activists from Sostro and Kašelj they also maintained the link with Ljubljana. On 19th February 1945 courier Franc Smrekar was killed in sudden home guard invasion. Other managed to survive.

On the wall of the church of St. Nicholas is situated a memorial plaque to in 1st World War fallen soldiers (1914-1918). On the plaque are written the names of  the dead soldiers from Vnanjarje, Dolgobrdica, Gabrija, Koška Poljana, Tuji Grm and Janče. Memorial plaque was positioned by parishioners. [_Read more_]

Church in Janče was built in year 1796, it is dedicated to St. Nicholas. It was erected initially from a chapel, hollowed to St. Nicholas, and serves today as the presbytery. Church is of baroque appearence from first half of the 18th century. Church bell was built in year 1830. [_Read more_]

Chapel of Mother of God of Lourdes (Big chapel) was erected in year 1897 in memory of epicenter of big Ljubljana earthquake. The earthquake happened in the night from 14th to 15th April 1895 and strongly affected Ljubljana and its surrounding. The chapel was erected by Ljubljana inhabitants. [_Read more_]

Old chapel of St. Nicholas is located on southern slope of Janče hill, near the church of St. Nicholas and center of the village.
