Old school in the old city center of Višnja Gora

The start of the education in Višnja Gora is marked with the year 1554 , when the first folks teacher started teaching 15 children in the city house. First real shift in education happened in year 1815, when a primary school with the most basic study programme was. The teacher had several roles – organist, sexton, writer and coroner. His pay came from tuition. Until year 1824, the school was organized in the ground floor sexton room, later in the City house.

In year 1906 the school was expanded into four class school, with the construction of the new building it also got its new image, as we know it still today. At that time the school library recovered, as the number of books has grown up to 200. In¸    school year 1920/21, the school was further expanded in five class school, and in year 1930, to six class.

In the ground floor the school had three classrooms and the teacher room, in second floor a classroom, room for teaching aid, room for apartment of the single teacher and three-room apartment for the manager. In the basement there were three separated woodsheds, basement and the boiler for laundry. The building had water supply and electricity. Electricity was only meant for apartments. The library had 320 book for schoolchildren and 220 for teachers.

In time of Second World War class took place in the school building, after bombardment in year 1943 in the surroundings and in Codelli castle, until arson of both buildings in December the same year. In the fire the school lost entire inventory, archive and library. Because of that the class was cancelled until March 1945.
