Predel is international road pass between Italy and Slovenia. Predel, which is in Italian called Predil, is located on altitude of 1156 meters; it is a high road pass between valley of Kanal and Upper Posočje above glacial Rabeljsko lake in Julian Alps.

In Roman times and in the Middle Ages a trade route had run over this pass. Just one kilometre away stands Predel fort. Austrians started to build the fort in year 1808, only a year later it played a vital role at defending against penetration of Napolenon army across the territory of today’s Slovenia. Today some ruins of the fort are preserved, which show its layout. The monument beside it it still very well preserved. The monument was erected in memory of tri day battle, which happened in May 1809. Napoleon soldiers and Austrian defenders – Slunj’s border regiment fought here. The regiment fought under the leadership of captain Johann Hermann von Hermannsdorf until the end. French conquered the fort in the end and burned it down, survivals were caught. Fallen soldiers are buried in the common tomb beside the fort below the road. By an order of the Emperor Ferdinand I., in year 1848, they erected the monument in the shape of a pyramid next to the road. The Lion, which lies on the dynamite was set there three years later.

Viaduct Predel
Viaduct Predel is located above the village Log pod Mangartom, which was completely destroyed by a landslide in year 2000. Today’s viaduct is 128 meters long, 10 meters wide. It overcomes the gorge on the height of 60 meters from the bottom of the canyon. [_Read more_]

Fort Predel
Fort Predel is located only a few 100 meters away from the pass Predel and was one of the six forts from Koroška fort system. During the war and after a wrathful battle it was burned down twice. In year 1848 a new one was built on the location of the old fort, which served until 1880. [_Read more_]

Tomb to the fallen
The tomb was constructed in the memory of the fallen soldiers and defenders of the fort, who were the victims of the battle between Austrian army and Napoleon’s units. The battle happened in May 1809. Joint tomb is located next to the fort below the road. Austria-Hungary soldiers arranged it in year 1916. [_Read more_]
