Waterfall Savica is one of those more famous waterfalls, which have a touch of romance and sort of historical significance. It is one of the most visited Slovenian waterfalls and has great tourist importance in the Bohinj area. France Prešeren already praised it in his songs, also in more humorous ones. And right at the foot of the waterfall he probably got the idea for the famous poem Baptism at Savica (si. Krst pri Savici). In summer, in the morning dawn, when the sun’s first rays touch falling water, a beautiful rainbow is made. The visible part of Savica receives the water from the wider Karst area, from Black lake (si. Črno jezero) located 500 meters above. Savica is a unique feature among waterfalls in the world, as the water flow in the already hidden underground is divided into two strands. Lower, the right one, 25 meters high strand flows at the underground fissure from higher located lake in the explored subterranean tunnel. Left one, the 78-meter high strand is running at the height of the same underground tunnel, but from a neighboring lake, into which water pours in from the same lake, from which water seeps down into lower right strand.
INTERESTING
Sometimes, after heavy rain it happens, that karst area in the surroundings of Black lake is no longer able to swallow any more water. At that time the waterfall Savica, for a short period of time, becomes nearly 600 meters high. At the same time, waterfall Savica, on the left side gets more than 600 meters high waterfall.
