The church of St. Cyril and Methodius was built in year 1986 by plans of France Kvaternik. Cross’ sweat on the south wall is the work of sculptor Stane Jarem. Statues of St. Cyril and Methodius (Method) are the work of academic sculptor Černe. On the choir hangs a painting of Anthony Marin Slomšek, which was painted by academic painter Lojze Perko. The statue of Mary in the church is from the chapel at blessed spring. Stained glass windows in the chapel are the work of Veselka Šorli Puc. In addition to the tebemacle stands a wooden polychromed statue of Mary. The painting of Last supper was painted by painter Christopher Zupet from Ljubljana.
HISTORY
After WWII, due to the proximity of Ljubljana, on Škofljica population began to rise sharply. New immigrants did not feel excessive attachment to Šmarje, where that time settlement ecclesiastically-legally belonged. To some the church became too distant and they walked to Holy mass in Ljubljana (Rudni, Rakovnik, …), other because of that abandoned the visits to church.
To get the church and worship closer to the people, after year 1964 Šmarje priest Janez Sladič received chaplains to assist him, who specially cared for the people here. When one of them, Marko Levstik, became the next priest of Šmarje parish, he began to pursue actively the creation of a new parish. His effort was rewarded on 4th November 1976 with the signing of the founding document of the parish, signed by the archbishop Joseph Pogačnik. Parish was solemnly proclaimed three days later by bishop Stanislav Lenič in Lanišče.
First priest Peter Kvaternik was after the establishment of new parish lived in Šmarje for a few months, and then he moved to rental apartment in Škofljica. After a few year, the parish purchased the premises at Dolenjska road in which, since then, are parish activities, especially religion, which was previsously held in Lanišče church.
Škofljica
Škofljica is a settlement in the municipality of Škofljica, in direct vicinity of Ljubljana Marshes. It is a roadside settlement and municipal centre along the road Ljubljana – Kočevje and along the railway Ljubljana – Metlika. Settlement was developed at the crossroads towards Ig, Kočevje and Ljubljana. [_Read more_]
