Mineral spring under Olševa
Spring water is rich with iron, magnesium and calcium and it is quite sour. Contents of manganese, zinc, aluminium, nickel and barium are compared to other springs in Karavanke increased, slightly increased is also a content of so called “rare soils”. Due to its exceptional characteristics, the stream has geolocial and hydrological natural value. Since year 1987 it is protected as a natural monument.
Spring is situated in area of Javorniški layers, which belong to Jezersko Paleozoic. It is watered by water, which circulates beneath the surface, but on its way captures carbon dioxide gas, which is rising to surface from the depths. This is how sour water is made, along with process of dissolving minerals in mineral rich parent rocks.
Water is known for its medical effects. it stimulates the blood-forming organs and it has beneficial effect on relieving the symptoms of iron deficiency.
GOOD TO KNOW
– the stream is also called sour water
– organism the iron, which is in the stream dissolved in divalent form, absorbs very well and therefore is fully exploited
– contact with the air causes oxidation of divalent iron, so the water must be consumed immediately nearby the spring
– sour water in the stream was first mentioned in year 1856, but it was also listed by Johann Frischauf in description of Savinja Alps in year 1877
– rare soils have the same chemical and physical properties and represent 16 chemical elements: yttrium, scandium and 14 elements from the group of lanthanides
