The bridge is located in settlement Ribčev Laz and stretches across river Jezernica, which is an outflow river of Bohinj lake, and also the second shortest river in Slovenia. On the other side of the bridge is the church of St. John the Baptist (si. Sv. Janez Krstnik). It is a stone bridge, which is together with the church of St. John the Baptist and Bohinj lake a symbol and most recognizable image of Bohinj. All three sights decorate numerous postcards, leaflets, and articles about Bohinj. Due to its unique location, Janez’s bridge offers exceptional views of Bohinj lake and river Jezernica on the other side. Over the bridge is a traffic connection between Upper and Lower Bohinj valley. Janez’s bridge is monument-protected.
The bridge got its name after John the Baptist (si. Janez Krstnik), who was a known religious leader from the first century AD and is considered an important predecessor of Christianity. Today’s bridge was built in the year 1926 on the same spot as the old wooden bridge. It rises across the water in the shape of a double semicircular arch made of stone carvers, with which the fence is padded on both sides of the road.
