Jesenica

Jesenica

Jesenica is a settlement below mount Kojca, northwest of Cerkno in the traditional Littoral region of Slovenia. The total size of the settlement is 3 square kilometers, with a total of around 71 inhabitants. Village Jesenica and Orehek, with houses scattered on the slope of Kojca and Ritovščina, cover the entire valley on the sunny side of Kojca. Local community Orehek – Jesenica belongs among the youngest, but the infrastructure is most demanding in the municipality. Inhabitants of the steep village are aware that the survival and staying of people depend mostly on themselves. This is why voluntary work campaigns started here in the 1950s. Locals were digging the road, which is today’s main road towards Vrh Križ, building village water supplies, set up the route for the first telephone. The road infrastructure is most important for this area, and the locals dedicate a lot of their volunteer work, from winter services to maintenance and emergency repairs. Next to the church of St. Ubald is the tomb of the partisans, who were killed by Germans on the fields between Jesenica and Orehek.
