Valley Draga lies on northern edge of Ljubljana marshes with a group of seven artificial ponds and swamps and occupies around 50 ha of area. Ponds were excavated in 18th century, probably because of clay for nearby Brickyard or cultivation of fish.
Every pond has it’s own name. Northern group consists of ponds Rakovnik and Špilgut. Southern group consists of ponds First, Big, Middle, Cut and Last. Today, ponds are habitat for numerous water, swamp, plant and animal spieces, many of them endangered. Ponds are surrounded by reeds, antlers, somwhere sedge, bulrush and black alder. Of aquatic plants are dominating white water lily and water knotweed. In pond grows endangered little bladdernwort.
Ponds and their vicinty area are nesting grounds and eating place, a migratory station and wintering area for birds. In the valley of Draga we noticed 152 different kinds of birds.
In the ponds lives pond turtle, which is since year 1993 protected species and can not be hundted, prosecuted or held in captivity. Also an otter feeds in the ponds.
