Postojna

 

Postojna is an urban settlement in the administrative center of municipality Postojna, which is located on the gradual slope above the bottom of the eastern part of Spodnja Pivka (en. Lower Pivka), below the southern edge of Postojnska vrata (en. Postojna door) on altitude 612 meters. It is the most gradual passage from the hinterland of Slovenia towards the sea. Postojna is located in Littoral-Inner Carniola region, on the area, where there are many forests that have lead to the development of the wood industry, somewhat later, the machinery and food industry. Big impact in this area has tourism. The city is also an educational center with secondary school center, college, and foresty school. It is also an administrative center with the court, at the same time also commercial, health, and cultural center. In the city is parish church St. Stefan and subsidiary church St. Lazar on city cemetery.

NAME OF THE CITY

The city was not always called Postojna, it was for the first time mentioned in the 13th century under the name Arnsberg, later Adelsberg. Before the current name settled, the city has experienced quite a few changes in its name. In the middle of the 14th century, the name Postoyna occurs. The city got its name after the white-tailed eagle (Haliaeetus albicilla) or postojna, which a bird of prey from the family of goshawks and which nested on nearby Sovič. Its motif is on the Postojna coat of arms.

HISTORY

Near the city is a famous post Bealov spodmol, which is Paleolithic cave site with remains of tools and bones of the prey of the former hunters. From times of Roman empire partly preserved fort stands on Sovič and Roman findings along the highway. The old city center is called Majlont, which developed below hill Sovič, where still today are seen preserved remains of a medieval castle. Postojna was for the first time mentioned in the year 1226, as a market in the year 1432. In the 16th century, Turks came to the city several times. In times of horse and cart driving, the city expanded along with today’s Tržaška and Ljubljanska cesta (en. street), in the year 1857 also towards the train station with the construction of the railway. In the year 1689, the Sovič castle burnt down, for what on today’s Titov trg (en. Tito square) Spodnja graščina (en. Lower manor) was built. Here used to be a court, today here is Institute for exploring Karst. In the year 1810, the city gets gymnasium, in the year 1851 printing house, which was bought by Maks Šeber. In the year 1909, Postojna acquires the status of the city. It becomes an important provincial center, because of its favorable traffic position and tourism. It experienced rapid growth during world wars when it belonged to Italy. Italians built barracks in the upper part of the city. After WWII the city expanded even more with construction of apartment buildings.
